GLOBSCAR in the Kruger National Park
2002-12-01 | |
The results obtained by the GLOBSCAR in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, have been compared with monthly burn scar vectors provided by the GIS laboratory of the Kruger National Park Scientific services.
The detection results obtained are best over grassland and savannah vegetation types (classes 9 and 10 in the IGBP land cover classification). The picture on next page shows an example of a large fire in the southern part of the Kruger Park as detected by GLOBSCAR (in black). Active fires as detected by the ATSR-2 World Fire Atlas (WFA) are also shown in red. The total burnt area as provided by the validation dataset (local field expert in the national park) is shown in brown in the lower-left caption. According to the GLOBSCAR results, this large burning occurs in September in the lower part of the National Park. This is confirmed by the validation data results. The spatial correlation between the two datasets is pretty good and the total amounts detected as burnt are comparable. GLOBSCAR presents some omission errors though, due mostly to the lack of any region-growing feature in the algorithm, resulting in a sometimes scattered burnt surface. |
