Beginning in 2003, the Ministry of the Environment (Ministério do Meio Ambiente – MMA) undertook efforts, with the support of international cooperation, to develop a National Action Plan to Combat Desertification and Mitigate the Effects of Drought – NAP-Brazil, which included the active involvement of other ministries and federal agencies engaged in Areas Susceptible to Desertification – ASD, the 11 state governments with regions affected by desertification, and local organized civil society.
The NAP-Brazil became an official program and was incorporated in the federal government’s Pluriannual Plan of investments, with emphasis placed on its role in promoting the transversality of the topic “Combating Desertification.†|
