CSIR and UCT, in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, operates the Marine Remote Sensing Unit, mandated to undertake research and provide operational data in the marine earth observation field.
The MRSU currently undertakes active research in ocean colour, SST, altimetry and synthetic aperture radar applications. It also processes and provides MODIS and MERIS data for sub-Saharan Africa, under the auspices of the ChloroGIN and FP7 DevCoCast projects. The MRSU co-ordinates taught and research based postgraduate modules and degrees in marine EO at UCT, and runs/contributes to African EO training courses. The MRSU is based at UCT and the Centre for High Performance Computing in Cape Town. |
