The NOAA CoastWatch mission is to provide and ensure timely access to near real-time satellite data to protect, restore, and manage U.S. coastal ocean resources, and understand climate variability and change to further enhance society's quality of life. Our primary users include Federal, State, and local marine scientists, researchers, coastal resource managers, and the general public. CoastWatch produces near real time Ocean Colour, Sea Surface Temperature and Surface Winds products for U.S. coastal waters and beyond.

The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at Oregon State University is a collaborative partner of NOAA CoastWatch on this project. COAS conducts research and teaches graduate students in all aspects of atmospheric sciences and oceanography. Professor Curtiss Davis (cdavis@coas.oregonstate.edu) at COAS leads the group that conducts research and supports the development of new ocean color sensors for the characterization of the coastal and open ocean. The work includes collecting in situ optical, physical and biological data, testing algorithms, working with engineers on instrument requirements and design, and the testing and validation of ocean products. COAS regions of interest are the west coast of the United States and Chile and the open ocean off Hawaii.
