Municipality of Athens

The Department of Urban Design and Environment of the Municipality of Athens leads a series of urban environmental related projects such as:

• Increase of city’s greenery by planting roofs and high trees on road pavements.
• Case studies for the evaluation and the measures that need to be taken for improving the energy efficiency of municipal buildings.
• Design of bioclimatic municipal buildings.

The Greater Athens Metropolitan Area includes 91 municipalities and 33 communities. The administrative area of the municipality of Athens covers 412 km2 of the 3,808 km2 of the Greater Athens Metropolitan Area.

The number of inhabitants of the Greater Athens Metropolitan Area is close to 3.8 millions. The resident population of the Athens municipality is approximately 750,000.
