The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the strategic planning authority for London, led by the Mayor of London. The Mayor’s Spatial Development Strategy (known as the ‘London Plan’) provides the strategic direction for the 33 London Boroughs, whose Local Development Plans must be ‘in general conformity’ with the London Plan. In addition, the Mayor has been given a duty by national government to tackle climate change through preparing a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and a Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Strategy. The Greater London Authority covers a geographical area of 1,594 km2 with 7.3 million inhabitants. |
