In order to meet the reporting obligations from international conventions, European directives and national legislations , countries are required to produce up to date, detailed and harmonised information on their land cover and its use, at different scales, and for d ifferent domains of applications. Europe can build upon a long experience on land cover and land use mapping but most of the existing national data sets have responded to different needs and been produced with different standards and methodologies. They lack comparability across sectors and are in many cases out of date. All Swedish stakeholders involved in land cover monitoring have emphasized the need for a homogenous and nationwide and Cover database, which can be updated, on a regular basis and in a cost-effective manner.

The objective of the CadasteENV Sweden project is to implement a multi-scale and multi-purpose Land Cover mapping and monitoring system for large areas of interest in Sweden, according to national user specifications. The system will be comprised of two components:

  • a Land Cover mapping component based on a stratified approach which will make use of HR (SPOT-5) and VHR (Pleiades) data, combined with airborne data (orthophotos and LIDAR data) and existing land information databases in Sweden.
  • a Land Cover Change Alert component to detect areas with fast land cover changes (hot spots).

Both components will be demonstrated over a geographical area of 100,000 km2, featuring different characteristics of the Swedish landscape.

CadasterENV is currently implemented in Austria and Sweden, two ESA Member States
