EMEP

European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme
Norway
Scientific Programme
The MSC-W has been hosted by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute since the beginning of the EMEP programme in 1979. The main task of the centre is to model transboundary fluxes of acidifying air pollution and photochemical oxidants.

Initially a two-dimensional Lagrangian model was employed for sulphur only, but it was later during the eighties extended to nitrogen components and surface ozone. Presently, the centre operates (1) a two- dimensional Lagrangian model for sulphur and nitrogen deposition and a version for photochemical oxidants and ozone, and (2) a three-dimensional Eulerian model also developed for sulphur and nitrogen deposition and photochemical oxidants.

A key product of the MSC-W modelling is the source-receptor matrices or the so-called "blame-matrices" which estimate the contribution of the emissions in any country to the depositions or concentrations of any acidifying or photochemical pollutant in any other country.

The MSC-W has also been assigned the task of storing, verifying and distributing the emissions reported under the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution. The centre presently operates an emission database which services many of the activities under the Convention.
