|Beginning in 2003, the Ministry of the Environment (MinistÃ©rio do Meio Ambiente â€“ MMA) undertook efforts, with the support of international cooperation, to develop a National Action Plan to Combat Desertification and Mitigate the Effects of Drought â€“ NAP-Brazil, which included the active involvement of other ministries and federal agencies engaged in Areas Susceptible to Desertification â€“ ASD, the 11 state governments with regions affected by desertification, and local organized civil society.
The NAP-Brazil became an official program and was incorporated in the federal governmentâ€™s Pluriannual Plan of investments, with emphasis placed on its role in promoting the transversality of the topic â€œCombating Desertification.â€
