CIDE is a mixed research centre (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Universitat de València, Generalitat Valenciana) for the study and prevention of desertification processes in the mediterranean environment together with the study of soil as a natural resource, its characterisation, functions and behaviour from a theoretical and experimental point of view.

Scientific objectives of CIDE are focused on research on fundamental aspects of fight against desertification:

  1. Study of land genesis, evolution and geographic distribution
  2. Land degradation at different scales
  3. Erosion processes
  4. Land and water contamination
  5. Study of mediterranean ecosystems functioning
  6. Hydrologic aspects: hydraulic regimes and impact of draught
  7. Consequences of climate change
  8. Use and treatment of agroindustrial waste
  9. Socioeconomic consequences of land use change
  10. Rehabilitation of degraded areas and planning of sustainable territory use
  11. Application of new technologies to evaluation, monitoring and fight against desertification
