Innovators II - Insect Combat
Insect Outbreak Mapping
Major causes of forest damages are insects, often in combination with or intensified by abiotic stresses such as drought or storm. Recent disastrous insect calamities in forests indicate that due to climate change effects like drought, storm and warm winters insect infestation are an increasing problem in areas which have only been marginal affected in the past. In order to keep ecological and economical damages as low as possible rapid monitoring and mapping of insect damages is needed in order to apply suitable abatement measures. Embanking damaged areas is crucial to preserve important forest functions adjacent to affected areas.

The objective of this study is to formulate and to develop a method for an implementation of long-term, low-cost, and high-quality monitoring program for a rapid assessment of forest insect damages and to identify trends in forest health, caused by insect calamities. An aim is the development of an operational tool for monitoring damages in the forest and predicting potential areas at risk as basis for management activities. |
